Women of Kodiak: My Story

November 15, 2017

Keeping with the Women of Kodiak theme, I feel motivated to share some of my own story.

I'm Nannette, your friendly neighborhood beach-metal jewelry artist. I'm mostly self-taught, love getting my hands dirty, reaching a mountain top, swimming in warm ocean water (yep, wrong part of the world for that one), and my friends and family are amazing. I also really love people. There is no greater joy than watching someone blossom in the light of the generosity of others and the love of Jesus.

If you feel like my name is familiar but you can't place it, you may be thinking of actress Nanette Fabray or the broadway musical "No, No, Nanette." You'd be showing your age, but I won't tell if you won't!

My Journey

Wild Island Studio was born from my second chance. When I moved to Kodiak, I was emerging from the greatest low of my life. Confidence shaken, but not hope, this magical island and the creativity it all but demanded became my greatest tool for healing. I have a passion for transformation and the beauty of redemption represented in each of my pieces. This intense belief in new beginnings is what motivated me to donate 10% of all profits to Priceless Alaska to aid in the fight against human trafficking.

My Process

If this weatherbeaten metal could talk, the stories it would tell. Isn't there just something about the mystery of untold story? I specialize in transforming recycled and beach-found metal from Kodiak, Alaska, the wild island I am blessed to call home.  Each sustainably and ethically sourced piece is transformed by my own hands using primarily self-taught metalsmithing techniques. I absolutely love working with my hands. I would never have guessed I would one day sport grimy fingernails with pride!

One of my amazing friends is Alf Pryor of Dead Humpy Studio who put together this new professional video that tells the story of my brand. I love it! Check it out and let me know what you think (PS: the video can be played in better quality on my home page)

Thank you for letting me share some of my story with you. I am honored that you would meet up with me in this moment and I look forward to taking more steps together as this journey progresses.
